Devoted to Mary, the Blessed Mother, Maximilian Kolbe joined the Conventual Franciscans and was later ordained a priest. In 1941, he was arrested for sheltering Polish refugees and sent to Auschwitz. At the prison camp, he bravely volunteered to take the place of another man condemned to death and, 3 weeks later, died a martyr. For ages 9 –12.
