An Easy-to-Use Literature Program with Hands-On Activities
The Treasure Trove of Literature, Level 4 guides students through five classic works of children’s literature: The Bronze Bow, The Miracle Worker, A Christmas Carol, Banner in the Sky, and The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Treasure Trove of Literature, Level 4 includes:
- Vocabulary assignments;
- Reading comprehension questions;
- Oral narration assignments;
- Literary elements: setting, character, plot, and theme;
- Literary devices (subplots, types of conflicts, dramatic irony, and more);
- Literary connections;
- Weekly questions for individual or group discussion;
- Five studies of virtuous character qualities and saintly role models;
- Weekly hands-on activities;
- A final project for each book.
Level 4 continues the approach taken in Level 3 by challenging students to practice the skills needed to read and understand works of literature on their own.
As in Level 3, Level 4 directs the student to write the definitions of three words from the chapter that he is unfamiliar with. This assignment gives the student an active role in expanding his vocabulary and helps him develop the habit of looking up words he does not know the meaning of. The exception is in the study guide for A Christmas Carol, which contains many archaic terms and idioms. Extensive notes and definitions are provided to help the student understand archaic and idiomatic terms and historical allusions. Lessons called “Literary Connections” explore various topics—geography, history, music, and more—that are relevant to the reading. Understanding these connections helps students gain a more thorough understanding of the reading and also helps students develop the skill of making connections between literature and other aspects of life.
As in Level 3, students will regularly complete oral narrations. Oral narration assignments require the student to organize his thoughts and visualize the events he is retelling. Oral narration also helps the student develop memorization skills. If your student is new to oral narration, detailed instructions and tips for oral narration are included in Level 4.
The authors of the classic works of literature in this program excel at instilling moral lessons in non-overt ways through the characters, plots, and themes of the stories. Level 4 focuses on drawing out these lessons to show how good literature inspires and teaches moral lessons.
The Treasure Trove of Literature, Level 4 does not have a separate Guidebook and Notebook; instead, everything is included in a single consumable worktext. To encourage independent study skills, all instructional material is directed to the student. A removable answer key, including a detailed parent’s guide to discussion questions, is included in the back of the worktext. Level 4 is recommended for seventh grade, but could be used by older students, up to ninth grade.
Level 4 Worktext: 428 pgs. 8½”×11” Spiral binding. Softcover.
