The Arctic – one of the world’s harshest environments, has become home to the Inuit for over 5,000 years.  Their traditional culture, based on hunting and gathering, has enabled the Inuit to survive in a cold land.  Inuit means ‘the people.”

This unit highlights the traditional way of life of an example Canadian Inuit community and examines how the community has satisfied its basic needs, such as food, shelter and security.  This community study provides a model for studying other communities and invites students to make connections with their own community.

The drawings, based on illustrations by Inuit artists, help visualize and reinforce the text and the activities.  Such drawings provide insights into Inuit culture through Inuit eyes, as well as heighten student interest.
