This beginning map book introduces young readers to four basic map skills. The first is shape. Five geometric shapes are shown: from both a side view and a top (map) view. The second basic skill is symbols. This skill is introduced using non-verbal gestures as in hand and body signs. Subsequent activities interpret pictorial symbols on a map. The third map skill, position, uses relational words as well as a grid. A fourth map skill is direction. Activities provide practice using a compass to determine direction.
To help assess student learning, the book includes review activities to apply and reinforce the basic map skills.
